City considers Boys & Girls Club proposal to buy former downtown Mirro site for $1

MANITOWOC – The City Council’s Committee of the Whole will consider a proposal tonight by the Boys & Girls Club of Manitowoc to buy the former downtown Mirro site for $1.

Plans call to build a $3 million to $4 million Club center on the vacant property in the 1500 block of Washington Street. The Mirro Aluminum Company closed its doors in 2003 – which had employed thousands since 1909 — and the building sat empty. In 2016, the city of Manitowoc acquired the site and demolished the building nearly three years ago.

Under the proposal, the city would clean up contaminants for an estimated $253,000 and continue to monitor the site via state guidelines. It would work with Club administrators to submit grants for clean up funding.
