Wisconsin unemployment claims top half a million as coronavirus upends the economy

More than half a million people in Wisconsin have filed for unemployment benefits since the coronavirus outbreak began in March, according to the latest figures from the Department of Workforce Development.

As of Tuesday morning, there were 511,577 claims filed since mid-March. Total benefits paid topped $384 million.

Workforce Development says it received 4.7 million calls about unemployment benefits during the week of April 26 alone, about eight per second if the offices were open 24 hours a day, seven days a week....
