Wisconsin Treasurer Launches Task Force on Homeownership

Wisconsin State Treasurer Sarah Godlewski announced yesterday that she was forming a task force on homeownership.

The 22-person task force consists of county and city treasurers as well as representatives from organizations like the League of Municipalities and the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA).

According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, home ownership in Wisconsin has declined over the last decade.

WHEDA CEO Joaquín Altoro, says that’s a problem because homeownership is one of the simplest paths to building wealth...

Ken Notes: I have asked every guest on my show about this issue, and the problem is: That a builder make more profit on a larger home than a smaller affordable one. Zoning and building codes make it difficult if not impossible to site and build tiny homes or micro condos. Neighborhoods abandon inclusivity and diversity if favor of one size homes, and did I mention these will be big homes. We have moved away from manufactured homes and smaller lots. We fear co-housing and efficiency units with shared spaces and where we do allow this we do not allow the resident to build equity or have ownership.

Finally everyone is happy to blame anyone else. It is not the fault of builders, planners, developers, investors, home buyers, or neighborhoods -- It is our fault for not asking all of these to work together to solve the problem...
