Zoning change for controversial East Johnson Street project fails

A proposal to change zoning on the 700 block of East Johnson Street to make way for a mixed-use apartment project failed to gain approval at Madison’s City Council meeting Tuesday.

Developer Chris Houden wants to renovate five existing houses between 717 and 753 E. Johnson St., move two to 827 E. Gorham St. and either move or demolish two others. Five houses would remain on site. The proposal would bring 54 new units to the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood...
